Project TOP (TAIWAN OPERA PRESTIGE)
TOP (Taiwan Opera Prestige) Project is a visionary initiative dedicated to creating a distinctive operatic identity for Taiwan by bringing together the island's rich cultural traditions and contemporary musical expression. Rather than treating different genres as separate worlds, the project integrates the vocal artistry and theatrical aesthetics of traditional Chinese opera with the dramatic structure of Western opera and the accessibility of modern pop music. Performances are conceived as multilingual works, featuring Chinese alongside languages such as English, Italian, German, Japanese, or others when required by the story, reflecting Taiwan's diverse cultural landscape and international outlook. By combining traditional instruments with Western orchestral forces and modern production techniques, TOP seeks to present opera that is both deeply rooted in heritage and relevant to contemporary audiences. The project also encourages the creation of new original works that tell Taiwanese stories while embracing universal themes, positioning Taiwan as a vibrant contributor to the future development of opera on the global stage.
